Experimental Waterproof Prototype Development

The potential advantages of a new kind of waterproof 3-layer laminate system was studied in this design-based research project.

I developed a series of three jacket prototypes, highlighting the various advantages of this waterproof construction method.

Advantages of a Cohesive Membrane System:

  • The shell, membrane, and lining are fully customizable

  • Integrity of the membrane is not lost through cut and sew process

  • Strategic placement of materials and membrane for better performance.

  • Wearable technology can be integrated

Prototypes:

Precision lining with strategic placement of thermal dry-wick wool in high sweat and high heat zone for ultimate performance without compromising the membrane.

Partial membrane placement for a combination of waterproofing and air flow for max performance.

Electronics can be incorporated because this unique construction method allows for wiring to cross seams without affecting the membrane.

Functional lighting added around high movement areas for safety and visibility in the dark.
